ALTON, Mary

Mary (Buckley) Alton, was born about 1730 probably in Baltimore County, Maryland, a daughter of Joseph Buckley. Her first husband was John (or Thomas) Gibbins and they had a son named Joseph. Her second husband was, Joseph Alton, son of Erasmus and Elizabeth (Quinby) Alton of Westchester County, New York. Joseph was a brickmaker and yeoman and resided in Essex and Morris Counties, New Jersey and later Baltimore County, Maryland. He died in Baltimore County, Marlyland in 1766. Mary and her family later moved to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania in the early 1780s, the area which later became Fayette County. Mary and Joseph Alton's children were: Elizabeth Rose, Hannah Deaver, John, Benjamin and Erasmus Joseph Alton. Two of her sons, John and Benjamin, were Revolutionary War soldiers. Mary died in Fayette County, Pennsylvania before 25 October 1808 when her will was probated.

Mary is credited with patriotic service for paying the "Supply Tax" in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, 1783.
